WUSC was very well represented in both MTOC and Presidents cup action this past week. Teams travelled to Wheelock playing fields in Medfield for a chance to qualify for the MTOC tournament next weekend as well as one team playing in the Presidents Cup Final on Saturday morning.
Martin Zinny's 8th grade girls team had a fantastic final season with WUSC. The team won 7 of their 10 games during the league campaign meaning they automatically qualified for the MTOC play-ins top of their group. In the Semi-Finals they played Concord-Carlisle, winning 2-1. Onto the final played on Thursday evening, the girls played extremely well against a very good Westwood side. The game went into overtime where Westwood scored the winner. Not the ending the girls deserved after their years with WUSC, we thank them and the coaches for everything and wish them all the best in the future.
Tory Moore's 6th grade girls team also had a remarkable season winning all 10 of their games in their league. They qualified as top seeds for the MTOC play-ins and faced Ashland Storm in the Semi-Finals. The game was very entertaining to say the least with the girls going 1-0 up, 3-1 up, back to 3-3 before winning the game 5-3. They faced Needham on Saturday afternoon confident of finishing the BAYS season undefeated. The match went into overtime at 0-0 before Needham scored a goal that would deserve to win any game. The girls were unfortunate to loss the game but can be very proud of their achievements throughout the season.
The 6th grade boys team coached by Jonathan Martin also made the finals for MTOC play-ins beating Sudbury Academy on Thursday evening. The boys were 4-0 up at the half letting Sudbury come back in to the game at 4-3 before scoring the game winner to make it 5-3. On Saturday they came up against another academy side, this time from Lexington. The Heat had lost to Lexington earlier in the season and were looking for revenge in the final. In a tight game the boys didn't quite have enough and lost by 1-0. Congratulations on a superb season!
The 5th grade girls B team qualified for the Presidents Cup starting with their first game back in May against Ashland, then beating Milton and Holliston to get to the Final played on Saturday. The girls played a very even game against Medfield going 1-0 up, then going 2-1 down before scoring to take the game into overtime. Medfield scored to make the game 3-2 before Wellesley equalised with the last kick of the game to take it to penalties. The team held their nerve to win the shootout and the cup. Huge congratulations to the girls and coaches Jim and Steffen.
Also in action were the High School boys team coached by Patrick Heath and Peter Monsen. The boys played against Milford-Hopedale to decide who made MTOC next weekend with Wellesley winning the game. Unfortunately Wellesley had to give up their spot at next weekends event due to numerous injuries to players.
