Why Referee For WUSC?
Refereeing is a paid opportunity for middle and high school players to stay involved in the game while supporting the WUSC community.
Players can begin refereeing in Grades 7-8 through our In-Town Referee Program and progress to higher-paying, certified referee assignments in our BAYS (Travel) program starting at age 14 (typically Grade 9).
Certified referees age 14+ are especially needed.
Whether your middle schooler is just getting started with refereeing or you're a high school player who is looking to take on more responsibility, WUSC offers a clear referee pathway with real game experience, competitive pay, and skill development that extends beyond the field.
Refereeing By The Numbers
In-Town Referees
Become An In-Town Referee
Our In-Town Referee Program is designed for new and beginning referees in Grades 7-8. In-Town referees officiate 2nd and 3rd grade games at Sprague Fields and gain foundational experience in managing games, communicating with players, and applying the rules of the sport.
In-Town referees earn $20-$25 per game and receive training and support each season.
This is the ideal starting point for players who plan to become certified referees once they turn 14 years old (typically Grade 9).
Certified Referees
Become A Certified Referee
Players age 14 and older (typically Grade 9) can become certified referees through the Massachusetts State Referee Committee (MSRC). Certified referees officiate BAYS (Travel) home games in Wellesley and play an essential role in supporting our growing Travel program.
Certified referees earn $40-$100 per game, and WUSC reimburses the certification fee (currently $115) and recertification fee (currently $50 annually) for high school and college-age referees.
We encourage all WUSC players who enjoy soccer and want meaningful leadership experience while earning great pay to get certified.
Referee Clinic
Pre-Season Referee Clinic
Before each Fall and Spring season, WUSC hosts a mandatory Referee Clinic for all new and returning referees. This two-hour session is typically held at the Sprague School cafeteria about a week before games begin.
